Western Taney County Fire Protection District firefighters were called to the residential structure fire at 3:49 p.m. after the homeowner reported a fire in the kitchen area. All occupants were able to safely get out of the residence.
The first arriving fire district chief reported smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the kitchen, although smoke damaged the rest of the residence.
According to the occupant, oil was being heated in a pan when he left the kitchen for a few minutes. When he returned, he discovered a fire on the stovetop that was quickly spreading.
The fire district responded with two engines, two tankers, a heavy rescue unit and its support team. Taney County Ambulance District paramedics also responded and remained on standby.
Fire officials are using the incident as a reminder of the dangers of unattended cooking. Residents are encouraged to remain in the kitchen while cooking and never leave cooking appliances unattended.
The district also encourages residents to regularly test their smoke alarms to ensure they provide an early warning in the event of a fire.
