The official U.S. poverty rate declined in 2025, reaching the lowest
level recorded under the Census Bureau’s current historical series.
New federal data released Tuesday put the rate at 10.2% for the year.
The decline came as median household income also reached a record
high. The figures provide a broad snapshot of household finances
across the country during 2025 and will be closely examined for
differences among age, racial and regional groups.
The official poverty measure compares pre-tax cash income with
federally established thresholds that vary by household size and
composition. It is one of several measures used to assess economic
hardship in the United States.
The Census Bureau also publishes a supplemental poverty measure that
incorporates taxes, government assistance and certain necessary
expenses. Economists often use the two measures together because they
capture different aspects of household financial conditions.
The new numbers arrive as Americans continue to face higher costs for
housing, food, insurance and other essentials in many parts of the
country. A lower national poverty rate does not mean financial
pressure has disappeared for families whose incomes remain above the
formal poverty threshold.
The annual report will help shape debate over wages, inflation, tax
policy and federal assistance programs. Researchers and policymakers
are expected to dig further into the data as more detailed demographic
and state-level information is analyzed.
