SCAM ALERT: Beware of Fake Government & Law Enforcement Calls
The FBI is warning about a growing scam where criminals impersonate law enforcement officers or government officials to pressure people into sending money or sharing personal information. Between January 2025 and July 2026, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received nearly 61,000 complaints involving these scams, with reported losses exceeding $1.6 billion.
Remember:
• Government and law enforcement officials will NOT call or text demanding payment.
• They will not demand payment through cryptocurrency, prepaid cards, cash couriers, or similar methods.
• Never provide personal or financial information until you independently verify who is contacting you.
• Don’t use phone numbers, email addresses, or links provided by the caller to verify their identity.
Scammers can even use AI and video calls to make themselves appear more legitimate.
If someone claims to be from law enforcement or a government agency and threatens you unless you pay, stop and verify independently before taking any action.
If you believe you’ve been targeted, contact your financial institution if money was involved, notify local law enforcement, and report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
